Sunshine Motorway “Pacific Paradise” Bridges

This $12m contract was for the construction of two bridges on the busy Sunshine Motorway, just north of Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast. The works were undertaken for the Department of Transport & Main Roads (TMR) by a Bellero ARK joint venture, Bellero being an SGQ predecessor company, with Bob Goodwin and Mark Goodwin as Directors.

Key scope of works:

  • One four-span bridge
  • One two-span bridge
  • Traffic management
  • Dewatering works
  • Piling
  • Abutment & pier works
  • Bridge decks with precast parapets
  • Balustrading

Notable aspects of the project: 

  • Abutment zone earthworks / backfill
  • Substantial bridge construction works over a major motorway roundabout
  • Traffic and construction staging planning and execution to deal with the busy traffic loads
  • A number of value engineering options were identified by SGQ, including the following adopted measure:
    • Lightweight Fly ash material from the local power station was used to fill / backfill abutment zones to minimize settlement
  • Due to the efforts of the site team, the local stakeholders were very satisfied with the minimal disruption during the construction activities
  • Collaborative working with TMR was undertaken throughout the works and enhanced project outcomes
